Hi, I’m Mel.

I’m sharing little ways that I find comfort and balance with a fast-paced, digital career. In a more, more, more society I hope you find retreat and inspiration to strike the balance, too.

Keeping Holiday Decor Simple

Keeping Holiday Decor Simple

Holiday decor can get SO overwhelming, and Instagram can provide a lot of FOMO. Did I decorate enough? Did I go overboard? Here are some of my favorite tips for keeping my Christmas decor minimal, balanced with the interior design of your home and best of all… inexpensive.

  1. Keep it cohesive. Consider the colors and themes you have in your home already and elevate it by making it festive. If you already have neutral colors in your space, consider keeping it balance with subtle pops of color or more neutrals. Going overboard with bold and bright decor can make it overwhelming or throw it out of balance.

  2. Skip the ornaments. If you want to keep your space clean, skip the ornaments this year. A plain, well-lit tree can be so beautiful and so simple. Plus, it’s less work to assemble and disassemble. If you want some pizzazz, add simple ribbon or bows.

  3. Add more lights. Lights are so minimal and beautiful, and go with ANY color scheme. Consider adding extra lights to your garland or tree to add some whimsy without adding junk. At night, the lights feel calming and cheery during a chaotic time.

  4. Display cards. Christmas cards are so heartwarming, festive and colorful! Add a strand of clips on your garland or some ribbon across your doorway to display your cards on. This idea is basically free!

  5. Gifts are decor, too! Gifts take up so much space under the tree, and they inevitably add to the decor of your room. Consider the gift wrap you’re using and include it in your decor plan.

  6. Use what you have. Don’t feel pressure to go out and buy all new decor to fit this year’s style. Adding what you have, or even using food items on hand (think cranberries, oranges, plain greenery, taper candles, etc.) can make it feel so cheery without breaking the bank.

  7. Don’t forget the scent! Adding a holiday scent to your house can make it FEEL so much more festive without adding clutter. Use scentsicles on your tree or light a candle that smells like evergreen.
