How I Make My Resolutions (and stick to them!)
It’s time! During the last week of the year, I always sit down to review my New Year’s resolutions and make new goals for next year. Celebrate the wins and give yourself grace for the resolutions not kept. Onward!
Firstly, I always categorize my resolutions. Making one long daunting list on a blank page always makes it feel tough to come up with resolution ideas. This helps me get creative with my resolutions! They don’t all have to be super serious. The categories I usually include are: health, family/friends/spouse, work, and personal.
Write them down! Physically putting pen to paper and writing your resolutions in ink can help you stick to them. Place them somewhere you can see them often, whether it be a vision board or a desktop.
Another way to stick to your resolutions or create them is to quantify them. In short, give them numbers! “I want to run more” isn’t a trackable goal, but “I want to run one mile per week during 30 weeks of the year” is something you can actually keep track of. This helps me really stick to my goals and stay motivated to keep my resolutions.
Other tips for keeping resolutions throughout the whole year? Be sure to check in on them, of course! Put a time block in your calendar for the Spring, Summer and Fall to check on the goals you had, adjusting them as needed or setting aside time to make sure you meet them.
Here are some ideas for each category that I’ve made in the past:
• Health: set a new half marathon personal record, work out on average 3x/week
• Family/friends/spouse: try 3 new restaurants with my husband, go on 1 lunch date with my mom
• Work: grow my business with 5 new clients, grow my revenue by 10%
• Personal: take 1 day off per quarter to unplug (more on that here!), travel back to Breckenridge
