Hi, I’m Mel.

I’m sharing little ways that I find comfort and balance with a fast-paced, digital career. In a more, more, more society I hope you find retreat and inspiration to strike the balance, too.

Mud Room Makeover

Mud Room Makeover

This awkward space in our home took some extra time and lots of careful consideration in making it work. It’s a closed in breezeway between the garage and the house with lots of natural light. The end result was a mud room/laundry nook/cozy napping spot.

My main focus in this room was functionality and simplicity. This space is the first one we see when we enter and exit our home, so I wanted it to be bright and welcoming, too. Despite a lot of trials in getting the laundry moved from the basement for a more functional laundry space, it all worked out once we got that sorted through with our contractors. After the laundry was moved, we had a local cabinetmaker design the surround and my husband used a butcher block from Home Depot to create the countertop for it. These pieces all took a lot of time, but moving slowly piece by piece kept the overall look cohesive (vs. rushing through it for matters of getting it done).

From there, the challenge of finding a bench that was proportionate to the large open wall opposite of the laundry began, which ended with a locally custom made piece that doubly functions as a storage unit for our outdoor patio cushions. I learned here to hold out for exactly what I’m imagining, and to call on local makers when I’m stuck without options online. In this case, it was actually a lot cheaper to have this done locally and I could pick my size exactly and match the wood stain to our floors throughout the rest of the house.

After the bench was complete, I tracked down a custom cushion, a fresh blue linen cover, and pieced the rest together from there. Take a look and let me know what you think!
