Hi, I’m Mel.

I’m sharing little ways that I find comfort and balance with a fast-paced, digital career. In a more, more, more society I hope you find retreat and inspiration to strike the balance, too.

Closet Clearout: Poshmark Tips

Closet Clearout: Poshmark Tips

Poshmark is one of my favorite apps! I’ve made over $1,000 in sales and have become a Posh Ambassador. Selling my gently used clothing is one of my favorite sustainable ways to keep my wardrobe fresh and fund new purchases. Today I’m sharing all of my tips for making sales.

Poshmark is SO easy to use. List items from your closet and get paid cash via direct deposit when they sell. Poshmark covers the shipping and sends you a label once the item sells, so all you need to do is pack it up and drop it in a mailbox.

  1. Focus on gently used items in good condition from name brands. I have had luck selling some lower priced brand items (like Target or H&M), but in my experience the name brands like Lululemon, Ralph Lauren, Madewell, etc. sell the quickest and for the best return. Items with slight damage have sold from my closet but be sure to be upfront about it and don’t expect a high price for it.

  2. Take good photos. This is everything! You don’t need a professional camera, but take your clothing photos during the day in a room with plenty of natural lighting against a neutral background. Show the front and back of the item, show the tag to ensure it’s not a knockoff, and if you’re selling shoes show the bottom of the soles, too. If an item doesn’t photograph well, take a photo of yourself wearing it to model the fit (feel free to crop your face out).

  3. Fill in ALL of the item information. Poshmark will prompt you to do this, but try not to skip any of the options. Always fill out the color, size, condition, etc. fully.

  4. Be descriptive. Let the shopper know exactly what the item looks like and measures. Take close-up photos of any damage or pilling on the item to avoid returns.

  5. Search for similar items to price competitively. Look for the same items within the app to see what they are selling for to determine your price. If you feel like they are going for too low of a price that you want to accept, it might not be the right time to sell it until the next best option is donating it.

  6. Stay active. Start following other accounts and sharing items from their closets. This often results in more followers and more shares from your own closet. You can also share your own items, which I typically do each time I’m in the app. This is how I ended up with so many followers! It’s also important to log on to check for questions. If someone is interested any your item they might ask questions and a quick reply usually results in a sale.

  7. Ship fast. I always keep Amazon boxes and envelops on hand so I can ship an item as soon as it sells. I also like to wrap it in tissue and write a little thank you note so the buyer is excited to open it. Buyers love when they get the item quickly and they usually mention it in my reviews. 5-star reviews go a long way and can get you to Ambassador status if you have enough of them!

  8. Delete items you got rid of. This happens to me alot! Make sure you go through the app to stay up to date and ensure you didn’t donate or get rid of anything that is listed for sale, because canceling an order can disappoint a shopper.

Let me know if you have any other questions about successfully selling on Poshmark. Happy Poshing!
