5 Ways to Stay On Top of Self-Care

5 Ways to Stay On Top of Self-Care

Self-care is something we ALL let go of as women when we’re busy, and I’m guilty of it, too! We’re always putting others first. Today I’m sharing some of my favorite tips for staying on top of self-care in small and big ways from physical health to mental health – helping us seek the joy that lies in each day.

This is a paid partnership post in collaboration with SSM Health. To learn more about SSM Health gynecology services, click here. To find out what to expect before, during, and after your yearly well-woman exam, click here. Thank you for supporting the messages I am passionate about!

1.    Stay on top of your physical health. Preventative care is SO important! Every year, it’s recommended that we need two dental cleanings, a well-woman exam, a general physical, a yearly skin exam at the dermatologist, an optometrist visit, a stop for a flu shot, and plenty of other appointments in between. Neglecting these appointments can lead to bigger problems later on, and regular attendance can detect issues early – before it’s too late or astronomically more expensive.

Looking for a spot for your well-woman exam? Try SSM Health!

SSM Health offers personalized care from OB/GYNs that see their patients as people first. They’re compassionate and comprehensive in their care, and this year they’ve made their facilities safer than ever during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a bonus, they offer digital records through MyChart that allow patients to access their records at any time online and even communicate or book appointments without picking up the phone. So easy!

1. Give yourself time in nature each day. Whether it’s a short walk around the block, or a jog through the park, taking time to look away from your screen to see the blue color the sky and the green color of the grass (bonus this month…maybe some fall color!) is truly rejuvenating. It’s amazing how 10 minutes can really turn your day around!

2. Prioritize healthy movement and deep breathing. Whether it’s yoga, running, walking or just a stretch session, moving your body a few times each week is SUCH a game changer when it comes to physical and mental health. Besides the calorie burn, it’s a great way to clear your mind and de-stress – especially if you practice mindful breathing during challenges, too.

3.    Be creative. Exercise your right brain! I love art, and I try to carve time out of each week to doodle, paint or even put a puzzle together to exercise a different part of my brain. Time flies by and stress melts away when you practice being creative. Art helps me calm down, give energy to something else and just let go.

4. Take a phone break. Our phones go everywhere with us, and they can be a major source of stress. From social media to text notifications and work emails, it’s a wheel that never stops spinning. Taking a little time out each day that is designated “no phone” time (maybe before bed, or while you’re cooking dinner) can give you a little mini-vacation from it all. If you’re really in need of a major break, I love a good massage!

5. Take ALL of your vacation and sick days. Speaking of vacation, take your days! Don’t leave any paid time off on the table – you deserve every minute of it. If you aren’t feeling well or need a mental health day, use your sick time – that’s what it’s there for.
